Condolences

Condolence From: Mildred Nichols
Condolence: To the family, I send my condolences from Providence, Rhode Island. It was my privilege to serve on the Board of Directors of the Rhode Island Black Heritage Society for many years. One of Rowena's crowning achievements was the exhibit called "Creative Survival"It made a powerful difference to all Rhode Islanders. Rest in Peace, Rowena.

Condolence: I had the fortune to dream with Rowena Stewart when she led the Motown Historical Museum in Detroit. Michel Mossessian, Cathrine Veikos and I, as Principals of the architectural firm a4A, worked with her to imagine a new museum. The experience was certainly one of the more fabulous in my career— The memories of Rowena's energy, intelligent strength, and empowering spirit are indelible.
African American cultural institutions, architecture, and the architects who build them are forever in debt to her pioneering life's work.

Condolence From: John E. Fleming
Condolence: To the members of the Rowena Stewart family,
It is with a heavy heart that I write this note of condolences to all of the members of Rowena's Family. There are few of us who have the opportunity to be a pioneer. Rowena was certainly a pioneer in the African American Museum movement. She served as several founding directors of museums and most importantly, she was the catalyst that started the Association of African American Museums. As one of the first President of the Association, she kept the organization running at a time when there were few resources to do so. She was instrumental in developing museums, ground breaking exhibitions and mentoring young museum professionals. She was a giant in the field. She will be dearly missed and certainly remembered for a lifetime of contributions to African American History and Culture. So to the Stewart family, we in the African American Museum community thank you for sharing Rowena with us. We all join you in celebrating the life of Rowena Stewart.
Sincerely
John E. Fleming
A long time friend and colleague
