William M. Moten the son of the late Walter Moten and Grace T. Jackson was born in Colquitt, GA, and raised by his grandparents, Ben and Mahalie Hightower who also preceded him in death. God sent his angel, and took William to his eternal rest on Tuesday, February 17, 2015.
William later relocated to Jacksonville, FL, where he was joined in Holy Matrimony to Gale V. Chapman, on March 23, 1973. William worked for the Jacksonville Shipyard for many years before retiring.
William was a devoted member of Zion Hope Missionary Baptist Church, serving in District 8, as an Usher and as a member of the Male Choir, of which he was often asked to sing “Fix It Jesus”. He was also a beloved brother of the J.S Coppock Lodge #190, Prince Hall Affiliation and Order of the Eastern Star.
William was known to many by his nickname “Bud C”. He was always a hardworking man with strong values. William was a loving husband and family man to his wife, his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great great-grandchildren.
William was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Geraldine Godfrey; son, K.C. Perkins; granddaughter, Tanisha Newsome; and cousin, Calvin Twitty.
William leaves to cherish his loving memory: his wife, Gale Moten; his beloved children, Julia Mae Burke (Curtis Sr.), Betty-Jean Moten, WC Moten (Gloria), Garnie C. Perkins, Melissa Seaborn (Brad), Sandra Newsome (Alvin), Tammie Jackson (Albert), William McKenzie Moten, Elizabeth Moten, Micah Moten, Samuel Moten, Sr., Angela Moten, and Tamera Moten; treasured grandchildren, Felicia Burke, Sandra Burke, Gene Burke, Jr., Chris Holmes, Derrick Holmes, Shawn Moten, Nika Moten, Terell Moten, Tina Brown, Danielle Perkins, Garnie C. Perkins, Jr., February Haynes-Brown, Stanley Haynes (Krista), Alvin Newsome, Michael Newsome, Mai’ya Jackson, Malcolm Jackson, Michael Pryor (Dina), Christian Waddell-Pryor, BreAnna Waddell-Pryor, Samuel Moten, Jr., and Aniyah Nelson; 19 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Ruby Henderson, Louella Smith, Ella Mae Faulk; an aunt whom was raised with him as a sister, Julia Twitty; loving cousins, Mildred Harris (Herman) and Wallace Twitty (Debra); a devoted god-daughter, Naomi Simmons, and countless other nieces, nephews, family members and friends.
William touched the lives of many people with his charming personality and genuine straight-talk advice, and maintained his trademark sense of humor all the way to the end. He was a devout believer in the power and love of God.
The funeral service for William M Moten will be held 11AM, Saturday at the Zion Hope Missionary Baptist Church 2803 Edgewood Avenue West. The visitation will be 5- 7PM, Friday at the mortuary.
