Obituary for Barbara Jean Calhoun

Elder Barbara Jean Calhoun affectionately called “Bobbi” by her mother was born on January 11, 1941 in Lenox, Georgia. After moving to Jacksonville, Florida she attended the local schools of Duval County.

Barbara was employed by Duval County School Board for 25 years retiring in 2001. As a young adult Barbara came to know the Lord through her son Tony’s witness; under the leadership of the late Pastor Arthur L. Clayton. From that day on her life and her children’s were changed. was changed and her children. She was committed to living a holy life unto the Lord. She later joined True Holiness Church under the leadership of the late Elder L. W. Watson and continued to proudly serve under Elder Evelyn Mosley for over 20 years. She was a faithful member of District # 2, Evangelist & Minister Board, Trustee Board, Standing Committee, Sunday School & Bible Study Teacher, and established The True Holiness Prison Ministry – she would faithfully visit the local jail and prison. Prison Ministry was expanded to include written correspondence to various inmates throughout the state of Florida: “I consistently received a letter from Elder Calhoun every month for 10 ½ years while in prison” that is the testimony of many. She enjoyed serving and teaching the word of God - she has brought many to Christ with her straightforward no nonsense delivery of the word of God. In 2009 Elder Calhoun was ordained as Assistant Overseer of True Holiness Church and served as Presiding Elder until her passing.

Barbara was preceded in death by her devoted husband; Laverne Calhoun Sr.; loving son; Laverne (Tony) Calhoun Jr., and cherished mother; Georgie M Wilbert.
She leaves to treasure her memories; Three Children; Curtis Levon Jones, Cathy Ann DuPont (Nicholas), Cheryl Lyn Mayhew (Kenneth): Grandchildren; Alysia, Terrance, Marquita, Samuel, Jessica (Francais), Leah, Nicholas Jr, Kevon, Cheryl (Duante’), Jaylan, Kynnedee; Great-grand Children, Telysia, Teyanna, Melchizedek, Yesseacah, Duante’ Jr; Five 1st Cousins (like sisters & brother) Esther, Eva Mae, Virginia (Eddie), Willie Jean, Homer; Mother-in-law, Gertrude Calhoun; Two Sisters-in-law, Francena Hardwick and Peggy Rogers; Four brother-in-law, Harold (Peggy), Wayne (Mildred), and Paul (Christal); all of her god-children from Mrs. Nellie Walker, Sidney Madison, Juarlyn Smith, a host of other relatives, many loving friends and the True Holiness Church Family.

The funeral service for Barbara Jean Calhoun will be held 10AM, Saturday at the True Holiness Church 4022 Spring Grove Avenue. The visitation will be 5 - 8PM, Friday at the church.
