Obituary for Charlie Calvin

Charlie Calvin
Charlie Calvin, Sr. was born on May 4, 1928 in Jacksonville, Florida. He was raised by his mother and grandmother and attended the local public schools. Later he enlisted in the United States Army where he served in the Korean War with the 279th Infantry Regiment. Charlie received an honorable discharged with the following commendations: The Korean Service Medal with One Bronze Service Star, The National Defense Service Medal, The United Nations Service Medal, and The Combat Infantryman Badge. While serving his country, he married the love of his life, his beloved wife of 64 years, Leevater Banks Calvin. To this union was born seven children, Rev. Charletta C. Renee Robinson, 1SG Ret. Barbara F. Simpson, Charlie Calvin, Jr. (Willetta), Robert A. “Tony” Calvin, SFC Ret. Donna R. Broomfield, John C. “Chris” Calvin, and Lottie M. “Lee” (LT Ret. Joel B.) Washington.

Calvin was self-employed in the construction business as a professional Tile Setter, and worked many years with McWilliams-Massy Homes. Later in life, he became the owner of Calvin’s Tile and Acme Tile Service. Calvin was an expert in his field having the ability to arrange any type of tile into an exquisite elegant design. Many schools, businesses, and homes in Jacksonville and the surrounding counties have the trademark of Charlie Calvin’s tile designs. Calvin was a hardworking man, one who believed in supporting his family. Often he would work from dawn to dust seven days a week. He taught his brother-in-law (Leroy Banks) and sons his trade. A private, peaceful and quite man was his personality. He didn’t like the likes of loud noise and boisterous people, places or things. He enjoyed the beauty of life, nature, and Jazz music. One of his many humorous statements, “If I was any better, I wouldn’t know what to do with myself” was repeated daily. Still, he was a God-fearing man, one who knew the love of God at heart and prayed daily upon his knees. His many unexpected statements and sense of humor will be greatly missed especially by his family, but his life will ever linger in our thoughts and hearts of love.

Calvin leaves to cherish his loving memories his beloved wife and children; grandchildren, Antiwone Calvin, Ashley Broomfield, Stephanie Calvin, Theresa Calvin, Glenn Calvin, Joel Washington, II, Kendra Calvin, Justyn Calvin-Bennett, Kevin Simpson, Jordan Washington, and Lauren Washington; eleven, great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Yvonne Calvin; Lee Washington (Pop) his buddy; godchildren, Queenell Henderson, James (Chopper) Sheffield, and Charles Steven; family friend, Presiding Elder Ret.
