Remembrance of Willie Mae Ashley

From the day we met, Mrs. Ashley and I had fun together. I loved her stories about her early life: tiffs with her older sisters and troubles caused by here little brother. I’m sure these stories have been heard by her many “children", the nieces and nephews she loved so much. So I want to share an event from about 2 years ago that still makes me smile.

My husband and I brought her a candy bar that we had picked up in the airport in Washington, DC. As many know she loved chocolate, but this was special.

Well, she grasped it so tightly that it began to melt. With a moan, she directed me to reshape it and place it in the fridge until is hardened. Only then could she have the joy of eating the chocolate and saving the wrapper.

It was an “Obama Bar”.

Mrs. Ashley and I share a May 24th birthday. She had a few more years and much more wisdom. I shall miss our talks, but know she is where she belongs. I wonder if she’s found a teaching assignment, but as she always said, “It’s in God’s hands.”
