James was born on February 10, 1925 in Ocilla, Georgia. He attended the area schools. At an early age, he and his wife, Sarah moved to Jacksonville. They became members of Northside Church of Christ. James sang with the acapella group known as The Christian Fathers.

James was a truck driver for 35 years. Some of those years were with Jones-Chambliss Meat Distributor and the others with Pantry Pride.

James departed this life on Wednesday, February 13, 2019. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Horne and Susanna Gatlin Edwards.

James leaves to cherish wonderful memories: a loving wife of 76 years, Sarah Horne; son, James Edward Horne (Carolyn); three grandchildren, Patrice Smith, Ushanda Johnson (Lonnie) and Jameia Horne; a host of many other relatives and friends.
